Wordless Books

Wordless books are an amazing tool for all readers, young and old! Wordless books usually have no words at all or very, very few. The benefit is that the reader takes on the role of storyteller. Comprehension skills build from looking at the images, and readers do the work to tell and  sequence the story. Ask questions about what you can see, what is being said, how do the characters feel and why is this happening?

Children who find reading a challenge can access wordless books without the pressure to 'know the words' or 'get it right'. The images are doing the work and the reader can enjoy being in the book, imagining and creating stories for themselves. Adults who are less confident readers can also use wordless books to talk about and around the story, helping to create and build language without feeling intimidated. We want reading to be a joy, not a chore.
