Historical Fiction
Historical fiction offers the reader a chance to step back in time and reflect on life in another time and place. To walk in the shoes of those who have or may have lived is an opportunity to understand some of why the world is as it is now. What has led us to this point? Why do people still talk about that time? What would it have been like to live through something so different from my own life experience? Often these books can make us a little grateful for our lives today.
Historical fiction also teaches us about historical events and characters at the same time, blurring the research done by the author with some creative license to fill in the gaps. These stories help us put the puzzle of the past together in a meaningful way. Looking back can help young people as they engage in choices for their futures.
